Physiotherapy at Home After Knee Surgery in Pune — Timeline and What to Expect

Why Home Physiotherapy After Knee Surgery is Non-Negotiable

Every year, thousands of patients undergo Total Knee Replacement (TKR) or Partial Knee Replacement at hospitals across Pune — Sancheti Hospital, Manipal Hospital Kharadi, Sahyadri Hospital, and Ruby Hall Clinic are among the leading orthopaedic centres performing these procedures. The surgery itself is routine and highly successful. What separates a good outcome from a great outcome is what happens in the 3–6 months of rehabilitation that follows.

Without structured physiotherapy, even a perfectly executed knee replacement can result in stiffness, poor range of motion, persistent pain, and the inability to walk normally. The challenge for most Pune patients is the logistics: after a major surgery, commuting to a physiotherapy clinic daily is painful, expensive, and genuinely risky for falls. Home physiotherapy eliminates all of these barriers.

The 3 Phases of Post-Knee Replacement Physiotherapy

Phase 1: Days 1–14 (Acute Phase)

During this phase, the goal is to reduce swelling, prevent blood clots (DVT), and begin gentle range-of-motion exercises. Your home physiotherapist will perform:

  • Ankle pumps and calf exercises to promote circulation
  • Assisted knee flexion and extension exercises in bed
  • Ice application protocols for oedema management
  • Bed mobility training and safe transfers (bed to chair)
  • Initial gait training with walker or crutches inside the home

Frequency: daily sessions of 45–60 minutes. At this stage, the physio comes to you — you do not go anywhere.

Phase 2: Weeks 3–6 (Strengthening Phase)

The swelling has largely reduced and the focus shifts to strengthening the quadriceps (front thigh muscle), which controls the knee, and increasing the bend angle (flexion). Goals by end of Phase 2: walking without aid inside the house, achieving 90–100 degrees of knee flexion, and climbing a single step. Exercises include straight leg raises, mini squats, stationary cycling (if available), and balance exercises.

Phase 3: Weeks 7–16 (Functional Recovery Phase)

The focus becomes climbing stairs, walking longer distances, and returning to normal daily activities. By week 12–16, most patients can walk 1–2 km without pain and manage a full flight of stairs independently. Sessions in this phase reduce to 3–4 per week.

Total Cost of Home Physiotherapy After Knee Replacement in Pune

Home physiotherapy sessions in Pune cost ₹600–₹1,200 per session depending on the physiotherapist's qualification (BPTh vs MPTh) and the area of service. A complete 12–16 week post-knee replacement rehabilitation programme involves approximately 40–60 sessions, costing ₹30,000–₹60,000 in total.

Compare this to clinic-based physiotherapy: add ₹200–₹500 per day for cab/auto rides in both directions, multiply by 40–60 visits, and the logistical cost alone adds ₹10,000–₹30,000 — plus the fall risk during commuting in the first 4 weeks.

What Qualifications Should Your Home Physiotherapist Have?

  • BPTh: Bachelor of Physiotherapy — minimum 4.5 year degree, the standard qualification for a home physio.
  • MPTh in Orthopaedics: Master of Physiotherapy specialising in orthopaedic/musculoskeletal conditions — preferred for complex cases.
  • Maharashtra Council of Physiotherapy registration (verify the number if in doubt)

At Maa Sewa Healthcare, our physiotherapy team includes both BPTh and MPTh (Orthopaedics) graduates serving all areas of Pune — from Kothrud and Baner in the west to Kharadi and Viman Nagar in the east.
